Understanding Genetic Testing

PGT testing is preimplantation genetic testing that is performed during an IVF cycle that allows physicians to identify genetic or chromosomal defects in an embryo. The goal of PGT is to significantly reduce the chance of transferring an embryo that has a specific genetic condition or chromosomal abnormality.

For many intended parents, the ability to detect abnormalities in their embryos pre-transfer represents an opportunity to ensure that they only transfer the highest quality embryos, thereby giving themselves the best chance for a successful pregnancy (and healthy baby). But the decision with regard to PGT Testing is an important one that should be made in consultation with your doctor. The important factors to note are:

  1. The biopsy can only be done on frozen embryos;
  2. There is cost involved (of course) which appears to be in the neighborhood of $1,500 to $2,000 for up to 8 embryos; and
  3. It will likely add a few weeks to your overall timeline.

It’s also important to note here that although PGT is not done for the purpose of identifying the sex of an embryo, that is a by-product of having them tested. In this way, should you desire to control whether your baby is a boy or a girl, this would be way to do it.
